LHHS AcDec (1986-87, 1987-88) Home Page

Warning: This page is hopelessly outdated...  (in internet terms, it's almost a museum piece!).   The information on here is no longer valid so please don't expect the e-mail addresses to work.  If anyone feels inspired to update his or her bio, please send an e-mail to depaul@gmx.ch, and I'll be happy to oblige.  Maybe I'll get around to organizing another reunion one of these days...

What this is...

This is a reunion page for members of some of the Lake Highlands High School Academic Decathlon teams and study groups from the late 1980's. Cheryl and I thought it would be fun to put together a page where ex-Decathletes could send in short biographical paragraphs.

1995 Reunion Info.

On December 27, 1995 a reunion was held in the Dallas area. About eight AcDec members showed up. A suggestion was made to include addresses (both e-mail and snail mail) of members on this home page. Since this can be a sensitive issue for some people, I will only post the street addresses and phone numbers of people who have given permission (at the reunion or elsewhere) for their addresses to be posted. If you want to get in touch with someone whose address is NOT listed, send me an e-mail and I can let you know if I have that information.

If you did not get an invitation to the reunion -- and found this homepage anyway somehow -- please let me know your current address. Invitations were mailed to all study group and team members, but about five of them were "returned to sender" because the address is no longer valid. Perhaps in a few years there will be another reunion...

Photo Request

This homepage is a bit dull in terms of graphics. So if you have something to liven it up (a current photo of yourself, an old group photo, a copy of the AcDec logo, a good cartoon, some artwork you have done, etc.), feel free to send it to Susan at the address listed below.

  • Cheryl Hall writes:
"I was born in Dallas and lived with a family that had been there forever and ever, so my burning desire was always to go somewhere else, which I accomplished by attending Hollins College in Virginia (a women's college, NOT a girl's school and if you don't know the difference, then read no further), studying in London for a term, and moving to Boston for grad school, a city I'd never even seen a picture of, but Susan De Paul liked it, so I figured it must be okay. I'm writing a novel, no I won't say what it's "about," but it will be the thesis for my MFA and hopefully my first published book. I've had a few poems and book reviews published so far. I love it here in Yankee Land, but if anyone would like to airlift me some barbecue or TexMex, I'd be eternally grateful. I work for a small (and I mean small) telecommunications company where I am an assistant editor in charge of newsletters. It's sort of like being a circus ring master, only the lions are a lot louder and the elephants stampede on a daily basis. But, it's a job, and I've got a roof over my head and health insurance. I'd love to hear from anyone, especially since that means I could sit at my computer and look like I'm working and really be having fun."

  • Paul Phillips writes:
"I am currently in my fifth year at Rice University as a mathematics graduate student. With any luck, and a ton of scratch paper, I should be able to finish my PhD this year. Then it's off into the rough world of job hunting. Wish me luck. If anyone wishes to write to me, my email is phillips@math.rice.edu"

  • Scott Rausch writes:
"I was born the seventh son of a poor sharecropper family in Mississippi, where our tiny peapatch farm eked out a miserable existence growing those little flower-shaped radishes you always see on party trays. Momma could carve 200 radish roses an hour and got paid a penny for every thousand. Life was hard, until I came to Lake Highlands, where I learned the tribal rituals of pep rallies and acdec sessions. After graduation, I thought "Oregonie is the place I'd rather be, so I loaded up my truck and I moved to" Reed College, nestled in "The Rose City" Portland, Oregon. (pronounced OR-uh-gun) (See also Jason McGraw for more details.) I unwaveringly majored in History, graduated in 1992, and decided to make a career of my major. I stayed in my adopted home, the Pacific Northwest, and went to and am in grad school at the U.W. (pronounced "yew dub"), specializing in American Diplomatic History. (After 9 years, I'm reading George Kennan once again.) Except for ranting newspaper editorials, I have no published works so far but have an M.A., some teaching experience as a T.A. and writing tutor, and a marketable 3 years of experience as a food service transportation technician (pronounced "pizza delivery driver".) That's pizza driver, not pizza boy, and if you don't know the difference, you've read too far. Right now I am helping teach a 100-level course on American History since 1940 (the LHHS parallel is eerie, isn't it?) and preparing for my PhD exams. Everyone reading this that knows me is welcome to drop me a line and stop by when you're in the Evergreen State, and one should give at least 5 minutes' notice before you show up at my doorstep. (It takes time to find the pet snake and put him back in his cage.) See address below. P.S. I lied: I'm the ninth son and I have no pet snake."

  • Susan De Paul is currently in her fourth year of graduate school at U.C. Berkeley where she is attempting to earn a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. (Of course, if you found this home page, you knew all that anyway...) She's also learning to SCUBA dive and is trying to look old enough to not get carded at the public library anymore (yes, it has happened!). She enjoys living in sunny(?!?) California [i.e. - she hasn't experienced a major earthquake yet] and would love to hear what everyone else is up to.
